And yet there’s pictures of me on the bicycle… This is very disturbing. I think I am no longer—everything I do now is in public. So, what I’ve started to do is always act, so every time I’m outside, I will always do something that looks awesome. So that if anyone ever takes a picture of me, I look great. Before I leave the house I make sure I look perfect.”

• REBEL: Why choose to be involved with the Urban Arts Partnership?
• Jesse Eisenberg: I think arts education is such an important cause that particularly resonates with me based on my own experience. When I was in school, I had a tough time fitting in and feeling comfortable. But when I was involved in a play through school or in the local community theatre I felt more at ease and part of something larger than myself. Without the performing arts, I don’t know how I would have made it through school, nor do I know what I would currently be doing for a living. Acting in plays taught me how to interact with a diverse group of people, take risks, learn how to think creatively and develop useful skills.

• REBEL: Are you involved with any other social causes?
• Eisenberg: I’m involved with a number of educational, social and sustainability causes and enjoy volunteering. One organization that I support is a domestic violence program in Indiana called Middle Way. Their programs for youth appeal to me because there’s such a strong emphasis on recognizing and developing the children’s talents. I like that their advocacy model embraces not only support for individual change but for changes in the systems, institutions and culture that are necessary if we’re going to end violence against women.

• INTERVIEWER: What is the worst thing you have ever done as a friend?
• JESSE EISENBERG: I stabbed a friend once...but in my defense, he was a few minutes late. [Jesse gives a small smile.]
